Italy’s FM summons Iran’s envoy over Tehran’s protests repression

(MENAFN) Italy has summoned the Iranian ambassador to protest Tehran’s “violent repression” of demonstrators amid ongoing anti-government protests. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called in Mohammad Reza Sabouri, saying the heavy human toll—bloodshed, imprisonment, and likely torture—suffered by protesters is “absolutely unacceptable.” He emphasized that dialogue does not mean passively accepting a regime’s violent actions against its own citizens.

The protests in Iran have been fueled by severe economic deterioration and a historic collapse of the national currency. While there are no official casualty figures, US-based rights group HRANA estimates that over 2,000 people, including both security forces and protesters, have been killed, more than 1,000 injured, and at least 10,721 people detained across 585 locations in all 31 provinces.
